January 15 - February 13, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, January 15 from 8-10pm

Big Medium
916 Springdale Rd Bldg 2, #101, Austin TX 78702
Gallery hours: TUE - SAT, 12-6pm and by appointment

Big Medium is pleased to present Future Past, a selection of linocuts by Melissa Brown. This exhibition, held in conjunction with PrintAustin, brings together a series of reduction linoleum prints made by the New York-based artist over the past decade. Since 1997, these prints have served as primary source material for her studio practice and the layer technique inherent to reduction linocuts has shaped her process in all media. The ongoing print series has never before been shown in a solo exhibition.

EYE IN THE SKY HOLD ‘EM, a collaboration between Melissa Brown and Where, is an off-site, private poker lounge that will operate during NADA NY. Invited artists and collectors will wager original artworks in winner-take-all rounds of Texas Hold ‘Em. A live feed of the four-game tournament will be visible throughout the fair on a closed circuit television system installed on specially designed kiosks, which double as phone charging stations.

The closed circuit televisions system inverts the traditional casino security camera: Instead of ensuring fair play, viewers at the fair can see the players’ hands. And there’s a twist - each player will have a cellphone whose number will also be visible during the games. At any time viewers can text in tips, influencing play as anonymous spies and accomplices. The winner of each round leaves the table with an art collection created through both chance and skill. The bartered art works will form the basis of a forthcoming catalog.

In addition to the symposium, The Legal Medium will feature an art exhibition that extends the keyword of "law" to its full spectrum of uses: legislation, penal code, laws of physics, mathematical principles, universal truths. The show bridges these applications of law by examining processes of "naturalization"—a term that recalls not only immigration contentions, but also broader social instrumentation that renders disequality invisible, justified by the laws that govern nature.

January 18 - February 22

Opening January 18, 6 to 8

As a birthday present this year, I was given a trip to Foxwoods. We took the cheapest route of travel, which was difficult to find among the confusing welter of Internet options. The Chinatown bus leaves every night from Division Street at 9:30 PM and it is $12 for a round trip ticket. It was pouring rain. We were among the last to board.

I’ve always loved Casinos, even though I’m too cheap to gamble for real, or rather, the knowledge that the odds are stacked against me stands in my way. However, I’m still always willing to drop 60 bucks just to watch the spinning graphics: the prancing cats, the alternating geishas and dragons, the sword swings, the ringing coin drops, the colored lines that depict your winnings but are impossible to understand, the midi tunes, the mirrors on the ceiling as you take the escalator up: This way for the tables, ladies and gentleman. The mindless quest toward potential – it is all irresistibly seductive. Despite knowing better, I am taken in, hopelessly shelling out twenties in hopes of arriving at……. a bonus round?..... a free spin? Whatever. I’m up for anything. Playing slots is like sitting in purgatory, the last stop before death, a voluntary tax for opportunity, a vain hope that your numbers will come up, a momentary acknowledgement from the Universe – nothing is more American.

Despite my skepticism, I find the environment quite beautiful. One thousand candied fantasies of hot luck converted into cold cash all jockeying for your attention seems to make time stop, like you are riding on the Heaven’s Gate’s spaceship behind Hale Bop comet, speeding toward Utopia or a black hole.

Poker, on the other hand, is different. It is fun and it is social and you actually have a chance. Even the losers have a damn good time. Parts of people’s personalities are revealed when playing Hold ‘Em that would otherwise be kept hidden. It is a great game, one of chance and sizing up, luck and mathematics, skill and daring. More than anything, it allows you to play with money. I find it completely inspiring that money is valued by human perception instead of a stockpile of Gold. It means that human consciousness has the power to make the imaginary real. For this, it is worth peeling off a twenty and getting into the game.

This show is a collection of interrelated prints, paintings and animation. Each medium sheds light on the other. What connects my work in all of them is that I am cutting through layers. I am searching for some hidden payoff like a scratch-off ticket player hoping to find a reward beneath the surface.

On Sunday nights over the course of this show, invited artists will wager artwork in games of Texas Hold ‘Em. On the final day of the show, Sunday, February 22, there will be a closing and the exhibition will rotate. My work will come down and all of the wagered artwork will be hung. It will be a one-day group show of all that was won and lost, an art collection formed through chance.

Over the last three and a half years we have avoided the idea of doing an art show. But then a few things happened that made the idea irresistible. Last year, we stumbled into getting this giant empty space down the street that we’ve used to show our art collection to friends and clients.

Although we are not particularly interested in becoming an art gallery, over the last few months three of our favorite artists have had new bodies of work come together that really deserve to be seen. So we are going to do an art show.

Melissa Brown, Leif Goldberg and Erin Rosenthal have all known each other for years. It’s fair to say that all three are master printmakers. In one way or another the three artists have been connected to the explosion of creative activity that came out of Providence in the 90’s and early 2000’s. A common vision that has been evident within the three artist’s work in the past, is clearly still present.

The artists invited for this exhibition are unafraid of the spectra of Modernism, and deal fluidly with many of its traditional subjects and styles. And similarly to the Modernists, many of them are friends and lovers, visiting each other's studios on a regular basis, exhibiting together, and engaging in a continued dialogue about each other's work, as well as the work of artists that came before them.
